Much as we may associate Edgar Degas with his inspired portraiture and images of ballet dancers, a sizeable portion of his life's work consists of nudes. The more than 200 lush color reproductions here examine Degas's distinctive conception of the subject in paintings, pastels, drawings, and sculpture. The essays explore how Degas exploited all of the body's expressive possibilities, as he abandoned the classical or historical form in favor of a figure seen in her own time and setting—whether engaged in overtly carnal acts or just stepping out of an ordinary bath.
