Dogs have been beloved companions since the dawn of humankind. With the advent of photography in the 19th century, this love was immortalized for the first time on film. Surveying this worldwide collection of 200 photos from 1840-1930, the evident love between pet and owner is unmistakable. Some of our favorites include a prim Philadelphia matron patting her pooch, who rests on a pillow; a joyful woman in dungarees, hoisting her hound toward the camera; and a Canadian boy posing with his two favorite things—his cocker spaniel and his cricket bat.
