(Winner of 6 Emmy Awards including for Outstanding Miniseries, Cinematography, and Best Supporting Actress/Maggie Smith) When the heirs apparent to Downton Abbey die aboard the Titanic, a complex web of maneuvering entangles the members of the Crawley family. An entail which accompanies the earldom endows both title and estate exclusively to a male heir—but since the Crawleys have three daughters and no sons, the next in line is a distant and middle-class relative from Manchester. When this new heir—a solicitor—and his mother arrive to become acquainted with the property, it becomes apparent that the countess (Elizabeth McGovern) will not be able to bequeath her wealth to her daughters. This DVD set features the original version shown in the UK and includes the approximately 35 minutes deleted from the version broadcast on PBS.
This Emmy Award and Golden Globewinning series set on a country estate beginning in the early 1900s was written and created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes and portrays the lives of the Crawley family—earls of Grantham since 1722—and the servants who work for them. Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Maggie Smith star as the Earl, Countess, and Dowager Countess, respectively, who inhabit the plush drawing rooms, library, and grand bedrooms overlooking the park. Below the stairs live the servants, some as committed to Downton as the aristocrats above; others are merely passing through, looking for opportunities, love, or adventure.
