"In the middle of winter, in a tucked-away town, / Where the snow never seemed to stop coming down, / In a mountain-sized house, the color of sky, / Lived a girl with thick hair that took too long to dry." So begins this delightfully off-kilter tale of a girl named Ruthie Bon Bair, who refuses to dry her wet hair before bedtime. No big deal, right? But in Susan Lubner's book for readers and listeners up to 6, Ruthie is plagued by flowers and moss and other vegetation sprouting from her scalp. Ruthie and family attempt to control the garden in her hair, but even the cure is not without problems of its own. Using soft pastel colors in his watercolor and pencil illustrations, Bruce Whatley wryly depicts Ruthie's surreal dilemma.
