All-star casting and sumptuous cinematography were just some of the assets of David Lean's 1965 epic drama-romance, based on the Boris Pasternak novel about a married doctor/poet who falls for a political activist's wife during the Bolshevik Revolution. The film won five Academy Awards, including for Best Score (Maurice Jarre), and was nominated for five more; it also won five Golden Globes for best picture, director, actor (Sharif), screenplay, and score. This 45th-anniversary retrospective features directors and writers talking about how the film influenced them.

"Unspeakably beautiful images.... Warm and rewarding entertainment."—Time

"The transfer ... to DVD is breathtaking. At times the picture is so razor-sharp in clarity, it's as if the film had been made recently. Maurice Jarre's haunting music score adapts beautifully to a 5.1 mix, which includes many effects enhancements.... There's something especially impressive about being allowed to share the thoughts of Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger, and Sandra Lean.... Sharif hosts The Making of a Russian Epic, and watching him in action is like getting a lesson in timeless style. There's an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes footage … including screen tests, location footage and production sketches."—BBC

"The life of the movie is in its corners (the wickedness of Rod Steiger's voluptuary, the solemn pomposity of Tom Courtenay's revolutionary).... Watching it can be seductive. Consider, for example, the early shot of the red star glowing above the dark tunnel opening where the workers march in and out. The shot of a child peering through a frosted pane with the claws of branches tapping against it. The cavalry charge on the Bolshevik marchers. Or the way snow crystals dissolve into flowers, and a flower dissolves into Lara's face. Lean did nothing less than re-create Moscow and its countryside at the time of the Russian revolution."—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
