Description
Arranger, composer, but above all, a baritone saxophonist with a golden tone, Gerry Mulligan was one of the giants of the West Coast jazz scene. The quartet that Mulligan formed with Chet Baker is front and center on this 1950s retrospective, performing "Frenesi," "I'm Beginning to See the Light," "Five Brothers," "Tea for Two," "Laura," "Walkin' Shoes," and "I Feel Pretty," while a 1957 outing pairs the group with alto sax great Lee Konitz on "Almost Like Being in Love" and "All the Things You Are." From 1955, California Concerts features Zoot Sims's alto sax on "Yardbird Suite," and a 1959 collaboration with Annie Ross yields "Give Me the Simple Life," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)." Other albums here include Recorded in Boston at Storyville and The Gerry Mulligan Songbook.
