Description
Stacey Kent continues to delight us with her evolution as a singer. Lately she gave us the ooh la la with French chansons, and now in her 10th release she absolutely owns a group of bossa nova tunes, in Portuguese and English ("One Note Samba," "Mais Uma Vez," "How Insensitive," "Like a Lover"). Her voice is pure joy, and her musicians buoy it beautifully (including husband Jim Tomlinson, who channels Stan Getz). Roberto Menescal contributes an arrangement of his own 1960 classic "O Barquinho" ("My Little Boat"). In "Chanson Légère," Kent dreams of a refrain that floats "like a soap bubble, a cloud of cotton, a butterfly wing."

"Booker-winner Kazuo Ishiguro has explored lyric-writing … collaborating on several songs for the jazz singer Stacey Kent. The title track of her latest album … an elegant study of adult compromise over time, shows what happens when a fine novelist truly commits to songwriting."—The Independent

"The [title] song is steeped in a mood of saudade, an untranslatable Portuguese term for a longing for something lost. That feeling is the essence of the dreamier side of Brazilian bossa nova…. Kent's singing embodies saudade: pert and happy on the surface, wistful underneath…. Kent is an enormous star in Europe, but why not here?.... The most captivating selections included a quiet, introspective 'Smile' and another Ishirguro-Tomlinson collaboration, 'The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain,' in which a discontented couple look back to more carefree times and decide to try to recapture some of that magic."—NYTimes
