"It shows that people need music, and I am glad that my music has helped people enlarge their musical boundaries." That was Slavic composer Henryk Górecki's comment on the huge crossover popularity of his deeply moving (and million-selling) Third Symphony, a setting of three Polish texts with the theme of separation through war. Based in part on a folk melody and a medieval song, the work seems deceptively simple in concept but was devilishly difficult to execute.
"Runnicles gives a perceptive reading that is sensitive and honest. His account is wonderfully nuanced, and he elicits gorgeously lyrical playing…. Brewer is absolutely mesmerizing. Her rich voice lends a warmth to the work and brings out its delicately crafted expressiveness."—Deseret News
"The ASO is far and away the finest orchestra to have recorded this music, and Runnicles’s steady conception of the work gives far reach to the orchestra’s strings to make a sustained and beauteous sound."—Audiophile Audition
