Description
(2015 Grammy Nominee for Best Improvised Jazz Solo Brad Mehldau is one of the most highly acclaimed jazz artists on the contemporary scene, coming to the spotlight with the Joshua Redman Quartet and then forming his own killer trio with drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier. His latest direction is a twosome with Mark Guiliana, whom Modern Drummer deems to be "at the forefront of an exciting new style of drumming." The duo have been performing together for several years, with Mehldau playing Fender Rhodes and synthesizers and Guiliana on drums and effects. Mehliana comprises 12 brilliant tunes one can get lost in—six written together and six by Mehldau. Besides the title track and the 2015 Grammy nominee for Best Improvised Jazz Solo "Sleeping Giant," they include "Sassyassed Sassafrass," "Luxe," "Gainsbourg," "Elegy for Amelia E," "You Can't Go Back Now," "London Gloaming," "Hungry Ghost," and "Just Call Me Nige."

"Even by the standards of a prodigy, Mehldau developed his voice early—so much so that, to some observers, he seemed to drop out of the sky fully formed. But Mehldau's most formative experiences were communal rather than solitary, and fairly typical of a precocious jazz talent."—Jazz Times
