Description
Four of Gustav Mahler's symphonies and 50 of his songs were inspired in some measure by the German collection of folk poetry called Des Knaben Wunderhorn ("The Youth's Magic Horn"). A regular at the Met, soprano Diana Damrau is joined by baritone Iván Paley, singing both solo and duet selections from Mahler's settings of this material.

"It is fascinating to hear how Mahler's response to the texts became more penetrating and acute with each song in the early years, how the folksy anonymity of a setting like 'Um Schlimme Kinder Artig Zu Machen' becomes something much more personal and vivid with 'Ich Ging Mit Lust,' the next song in the published sequence."—The Guardian

"Damrau's lyric soprano voice is pure and lovely, evenly produced and free on top…. Highlights include 'Das himmlisch Leben,' which is a delight, full of character and lightness of delivery; 'Zu Strassburg auf der Schanz,' for which Paley employs just the right amount of melodrama; and 'Des Antonius von Padua Fischpredigt,' which benefits from a deliberate pace that allows Paley to revel in the satiric lyric. The final section includes the heaviest songs, including 'Revelge,' 'Die Tamboursg'sell,' 'Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen,' and 'Urlicht' (sung convincingly by Paley)…. Altogether, I can recommend this set as a comprehensive collection of songs that were of such importance to Mahler. The singers possess youthful voices and project such enthusiasm that I am hard-pressed to suggest an alternative."—Fanfare
