Description
The first four decades of the 20th century are explored in detail in this seventh volume of A History of Britain, including the founding of the Labour Party and the rise of liberalism, the struggle for women's suffrage, the failure to transform the empire and British foreign policy leading up to World War I, the conduct of the war itself, Irish independence and partitioning, and the interwar years. The book is part of the popular and highly regarded series by E.H. Carter (Britain's Chief Inspector of Schools in the 1930s and 40s) and history teacher R.A.F. Mears, originally published in the 1930s. They tell the story of the island nation in a quickly moving, straightforward chronology, covering overseas events, the arts, religion, and major social changes. Reissued in handsome compact volumes, the full series has been thoroughly revised and updated by David Evans, former Head of History at Eton College.
