In this live recording, noted Wagnerian tenor Christian Elsner turned to Schumann's intimate song cycles Dichterliebe ("poet’s love"; settings of poems by Heinrich Heine) and Liederkreis (12 songs taken from poetry by Joseph Eichendorff), continuing to receive raves for his characterization as well as his singing.
"One could argue that the words are at least as important as the notes in German lieder song cycles…. Elsner's conversational, somewhat gruff and baritonal rendition supports those on that side of the debate. He's believable in the role of a wounded writer…. [Eugen] Wangler … show[s] a wide range, from fluttery depictions of flowers to declarations of endurance."—New Jersey Star-Ledger
"Elsner sings with great clarity, very text-based, very courageously in the articulation…. His voice always remains flexible and supple…. With an amazing wealth of nuance."—Pizzicato
