In the third of his five landmark Anthony Mann–directed Westerns, James Stewart plays the relentless leader of a group of bounty hunters (Ralph Meeker and Millard Mitchell). When they apprehend a vicious, psychopathic outlaw (Robert Ryan) and his female traveling companion (Janet Leigh), the outlaw manipulates their collective and individual greed against them in a bid to escape. Mann makes breathtaking use of Colorado's San Juan Mountains throughout this 1953 film, which received an Academy Award nomination for Sam Rolfe and Harold Jack Bloom's psychologically complex screenplay.
