From the 15th through the 19th century, Europe remained in an almost perpetual state of war, and printed images during this time served a variety of functions—commemorative, propagandistic, narrative, or instructional. This exhibition catalogue surveys these etchings and lithographs—with works by Dürer, Bellini, Altdorfer, Goya, and Géricault, among many others—which depict soldiers, battles, and the aftermath of these struggles, as well as representations of abstract concepts related to war and peace. The text provides an overview of this turbulent yet artistically productive era, and capsule biographies are included for the artists represented.
