Description
Arguably the last great lute virtuoso to emerge before the instrument's popularity diminished in the mid-18th century, Bernhard Joachim Hagen (1720–87) was employed by Princess Wilhelmine of Prussia, and for most of his career was best known as a violinist. These six sonatas for lute—like all of Hagen's works—are contained in a single manuscript, housed in the City Library of Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. First prize winner at the 1984 International Lute Competition in Toronto, Robert Barto emphasizes the beautiful melodies and introspective mood of these charming sonatas. If you tend to associate the lute with background music, you may be pleasantly surprised by the pristine acoustics of this impeccably recorded disc.
