Description
In "One Corpse Too Many," Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) is called on to bury executed rebel soldiers, but the religious ceremony is disrupted when he counts the deceased and finds one corpse too many. No one is above suspicion as Cadfael hunts for the murderer. When the village goldsmith is robbed and killed, locals decide that one man must be guilty but Cadfael believes him to be innocent. The mob pursues the man to the abbey, where he frantically seeks the sanctuary of the altar (hence the episode's name, "The Sanctuary Sparrow"). In "The Leper of St. Giles," an old baron and a beautiful young orphan are to be wed at the abbey, and all of Shrewsbury turns out to see the unlikely pair ride into town. Cadfael investigates when the baron rides off on the eve of the wedding and fails to return. In "Monk's Hood," a wealthy landowner decides to disinherit his stepson, and Shrewsbury Abbey stands to benefit. But before it's final, he is poisoned by food prepared in the abbey. The dead man's widow is Cadfael's own childhood sweetheart. After his acclaimed role as the complex Roman Emperor Claudius in the television series I, Claudius, Derek Jacobi switched genres to play a Crusader turned monk in the series Cadfael, seen on PBS's Mystery! in the late 1990s and adapted from the bestselling books by Ellis Peters. At the Benedictine Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul, Brother Cadfael's knowledge of flowers and herbs—as well as his canny insights into human nature—help him and his friend, Sheriff Hugh Beringar, to solve crimes and right wrongs in war-torn medieval England (12th-century Shrewsbury, to be exact). Special features of this set include exclusive audio commentary by Jacobi, an Ellis Peters biography, a production scrapbook, and more.
