In "The Virgin in the Ice," Brother Cadfael (Derek Jacobi) revisits his secular past while investigating the death of a young nun found frozen at the bottom of a brook; Brother Oswin (Cadfael's novice) is accused of her murder because he had been found wandering, close to death and muttering about a woman. It is up to Cadfael to work out the truth of the case and to clear the name of his friend. A new monk's devotion to the order is suspect when a rich priest he's related to is found gruesomely murdered and, to clear up the mystery of "The Devil's Novice," Cadfael must negotiate a web of political and familial intrigue. And in "St. Peter's Fair," the murder of a merchant casts a pall on the festivities, and Cadfael believes that something more sinister than a tradesman's greed is at work. After his acclaimed role as the complex Roman Emperor Claudius in the television series I, Claudius, Derek Jacobi switched genres to play a Crusader turned monk in the series Cadfael, seen on PBS's Mystery! in the late 1990s and adapted from the bestselling books by Ellis Peters. At the Benedictine Monastery of Saints Peter and Paul, Brother Cadfael's knowledge of flowers and herbs—as well as his canny insights into human nature—help him and his friend, Sheriff Hugh Beringar, to solve crimes and right wrongs in war-torn medieval England (12th-century Shrewsbury, to be exact). Special features of this set include exclusive audio commentary by Jacobi, an Ellis Peters biography, a production scrapbook, and more.

"Jacobi is an incredibly accomplished actor ... the heart of the show in more ways than one. The rest of the cast are also strong, especially the various monks, including Julian Firth as Brother Jerome and Mark Charnock as Brother Oswin. The first series starred Sean Pertwee as Hugh Beringar, and he's missed in this series by many fans, though I have to admit I like his replacement Eoin McCarthy a lot."—The Digital Fix
