Description
Although Celtic music is a major presence in the international scene nowadays, when Christine Primrose released this album in 1987, she was still a voice crying in the wilderness. You don't need to know the language to appreciate the hypnotically soothing vocals of this native Gaelic speaker from Scotland, who shines here on "Coinnichidh Mi an Gleann an Fhraoich" ("When the Evening Mist Comes Swirling Near"), "O 'n Dh 'Fhag Thu Mi 's Mulad Orm" ("Since You've Left Me, I'm Sad"), and the dancing tune "'N Ath Bhanais Bhios Agam" ("The Next Wedding I Go To"). Primrose may be front and center, but she's capably backed by Pan Celtic Festival award-winning harpist Alison Kinnaird, saxophonist Dick Lee, and trumpeter Donald Corbett.

"The arrangements are subtle and occasionally brilliant—'Taladh' is only one voice and two saxophones, an unlikely setting for a lullaby, but it is lovely. Christine Primrose's voice is a marvelous instrument, powerful when strength is called for but magnificently controlled and emotional. Gaelic traditional singing has rarely sounded this winsome."—Allmusic.com
