Description
(A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 1992) In this memoir, Doris Lessing gives us a highly personal story about returning visits that she made to her Zimbabwean homeland in 1982, 1988, 1989, and 1992, after being exiled from what was formerly Southern Rhodesia for her opposition to the white minority government. Her insightful narrative encompasses modern Zimbabwe from the dwindling of animal life in the bush to political corruption, from the spread of AIDS to the success of a communal enterprise created by poor rural blacks. Awarded the Nobel Prize in 2007, Lessing (19192013) was one of the most celebrated and distinguished writers of our time, receiving the Somerset Maugham Award, the David Cohen Memorial Prize for British Literature, the James Tait Black Prize, Spain's Prix Catalunya and Prince of Asturias Prize, and a dozen other prestigious literary awards.

"An eloquent statement, one of the strengths of this account of a nation's tragedy is that Doris Lessing evokes not sadness but laughter. She describes this as 'the marvelous African laughter born somewhere in the gut, seizing the whole body with good-humored philosophy. It is the laughter of poor people'."Times Literary Supplement
