Description
Antonio Cifra was probably born in Gaeta, south of Rome, in 1584. From 1605–07 he was maestro at the Roman Seminary, and from 1608–09 at the German College in Rome. In 1609 he was hired as maestro di cappella at Santa Casa in Loreto, where he remained for the rest of his life. Cifra was a prolific composer, whose works included psalms, motets, litanies, "Scherzi sacri," masses, polychoral motets, and sacred songs, as well as secular madrigals. These lovely psalms and motets for 12 voices, published in Venice in the year of his death, reveal Cifra's mature late style. In an approximation of a Vespers service, these works are interspersed with Gregorian antiphons.

"To say that it is strikingly good just perhaps qualifies as understatement…. Ensemble Officium have, to my knowledge, only rarely ventured this late but they do so with very pleasing results…. The instrumental ensemble plays with a zest and confidence that matches the music's consistently sunny disposition. The recording is full and atmospheric, too; anyone interested in this period should investigate this without hesitation."—Gramophone
