Description
The 1414–18 Council of Constance was a watershed moment in European relations, which had the unexpected effect of introducing some of the most creative examples of contemporary English music to the French. An international ensemble whose albums and concerts are usually thematic, Chant 1450 documents this cross-cultural influence with vocal and instrumental works by Guillaume Dufay (Ave regina caelorum), Gilles Binchois (Te Deum), John Dunstable (Speciosa facta es), Robertus De Anglia (El mal foco arda), Johannes Brassart (O flos fragrans), as well as including a Gregorian chant of the era.

"This Swiss release by the multinational ensemble Chant 1450 covers the main composers involved: John Dunstable and before him Leonel Power on the English side, and above all Guillaume Dufay in the Low Countries. The English countenance is presented in sacred vocal, secular vocal, and instrumental manifestations, and the performances are uniformly attractive; the work of lutenist Marc Lewon in arrangements of various pieces from the Buxheim Organ Book is especially engaging…. The engineering is superb and ought to serve as an exemplar for other recordings of this type."—All Music Guide

"Dunstable's most familiar piece, O rosa bella (as an instrumental), is included. Dufay's O tres piteulx is also included…. The strongest examples of the style are motets, Supremum est mortalibus of Dufay and Salve scema sanctitatis of Dunstable."—Fanfare
