Description
A Dutch composer of vocal music, particularly sacred works, Heinrich Isaac (c. 1450–1517) was one of the leading contemporaries of Josquin des Prez. Isaac spent much time in Italy and was influential in the later development of music in Renaissance Germany. On this 2012 recording, Ensemble Officium performs Isaac's truly transcendent masses Missa Paschalis and Choralis Constantinus.

"We have had at least five Masses by Heinrich Isaac … since the mono era…. But for all its fame, we have had very few of the Propers from the Choralis Constantinus…. This program interleaves the Proper of Easter with the Missa Paschalis, but only the gradual, alleluia, sequence, and communion are taken from Choralis Constantinus; the introit is a more elaborate six-voice setting by Isaac … and the offertory is chant sung from the early manuscript Einsiedeln 121."—Fanfare

"A highly trained chamber ensemble with excellent homogeneity…. [Wilfried] Rombach's booklet text gives a very good insight into the works recorded…. The Ensemble Officium here proves once again that lively Renaissance music can still have amazingly powerful significance in our time. Truly a reference recording."—klassik.com
