Description
Trapped in the Austrian capital during the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683, Johann Caspar Kerll commemorated the event by composing the Missa in Fletu Solatium Obsidionis Viennensis ("Mass of Consolation while Lamenting the Siege of Vienna") six years later. Recorded in the church of St. Osdag in Mandelsloh in 2001, this program also includes several motets and incidental pieces. Born to Bohemian Lutheran parents living in Germany to avoid persecution, Kerll (1627–93) was a master of both German counterpoint and Italian vocal styles. This recording of his sacred music ably demonstrates why Kerll was a major influence on Handel and J.S. Bach.

"A striking disc.... Kerll trained in Rome, and there are echoes of Monteverdi and Carissimi in his motets, some of which are very sensuous. The Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble under Arno Paduch sounds suavely beautiful throughout."—Guardian (London)
