Description
This live concert recording from 1998 was filmed at the National Theater in Munich, Germany. Maestro Zubin Mehta conducts the Orchestra and Chorus of the Bavarian State Opera in a concert of sacred music: Giovanni Gabrieli's Three Sacred Symphonies, Joseph Haydn's Missa in Tempore Belli ("Mass in a Time of War"), and Giuseppe Verdi's final work, Quattro Pezzi Sacri ("Four Sacred Pieces"). The latter comprise a setting of the Latin "Ave Maria" for four solo voices a cappella; a setting of the "Stabat Mater" for chorus and orchestra; "Laudi alla Vergine Maria," a setting of a prayer in Canto XXXIII of Dante's Paradiso for four female voices a cappella; and a setting of the Latin "Te Deum" for double chorus and orchestra. The soloists are Angela-Maria Blasi (soprano), Silvia Fichtl (alto), Claes-Håkan Ahnsjö (tenor), and Martin Gantner (bass).
