Successor to Jacobus Vaet as Kapellmeister at the court of Vienna, the extremely prolific Flemish composer Philippus de Monte (1521–1603) was one of his era's greatest masters of polyphonic form. Culled from various phases of de Monte's long career, these 17 selections include Beati qui habitant, Anime dolorosa, Bon jour mon coeur, Le grand amour, Filiae Jerusalem, and Benedictio et claritas. Led by Laurent Gendre, the Ensemble Orlando Fribourg takes a historically informed approach to vocals, and—accompanied by cornet and sackbuts—achieves an even more resonant sound. In the booklet, all of the lyrics appear in English translation.

"[De Monte's] sacred pieces are pristine works of Franco-Flemish polyphony that look back to Josquin, and even the heated Italian madrigals ... have a distinctive philosophical flavor that is nicely rendered here."—Allmusic.com
