Description
Although Japan has artistically become synonymous with woodblock prints, calligraphy, and cartoons, the nation's 15,000-year tradition of fine ceramics is little known in the West. After a brief survey of the art form's history in Japan, Samuel Lurie and Beatrice Chang introduce more than 100 contemporary ceramic works, depicting them in full color photographs, with some spreads up to 12 19 1/2. Variety is key here, with objects showing the influence of art deco, Dadaism, and pop. One piece of dome-shaped pottery sports a laughing mouth above a ring of piano keys, while another piece features a line of "rush hour zombies" shambling out of a stylized subway car; numerous other examples feature simple, elegant design and vivid colors.
