Description
This recording opens with a beautiful and inventive piece by the youthful Felix Mendelssohn, his Concerto for Violin, Piano, and Strings in D Minor of 1823. He wrote his String Quintet No. 2 in B-flat Major, Op. 87, in 1845, just two years before his untimely death at the age of 38. In a first recording, the Camerata Bern performs a version for string orchestra that Mendelssohn himself prepared.

"There is beautiful playing from [Antje] Weithaas and [Alexander] Lonquich in the extended opening Allegro [of the Concerto]…. The duo play with consistent charm and perception in a performance that exudes personality…. Breezy, fresh and very brisk playing opens the Allegro vivace movement [of the Quintet] with the slower central passages sustaining a tense undercurrent. The dance-like Andante scherzando is full of vivacity and charm contrasting nicely with the solemn and reverential tread of the Adagio e lento. I especially enjoyed the finale where there's real energy and exhilaration…. Splendidly recorded … well balanced with much fine detail."—MusicWeb International
