Description
We have conductor Paul Sacher to thank for commissioning many significant pieces of 20th-century music, including the three on this disc. His most well-known artistic relationship was with Béla Bartók, whose famed Divertimento for String Orchestra of 1939 was composed at Sacher's holiday house. Sophisticated yet exotic, Henri Dutilleux's 1989 Mystčre de l'instant is scored for string orchestra, percussion, and cymbalum, a type of hammered dulcimer. On a recording of Sándor Veress's Piano Concerto, Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon shows his affinity for the music of this Hungarian-born, Swiss composer, who was a pupil of Bartók.

"Straddling the lines between rigid contemporary classical composition and the swirling folk rhythms of Hungary, Veress' music strikes the ear as wonderfully melodic, with only a hint of dissonance."—Chicago Sun-Times

"Dutilleux's position in French music was proudly solitary. Between Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez in age, he was little affected by either, though he took an interest in their work.... But his voice, marked by sensuously handled harmony and color, was his own."—NYTimes
