Description
In 191415, during one of the earliest periods of solitary, intensive fieldwork within the developing discipline of British social anthropology, Cambridge anthropologist John Layard came to Malakula Island, Vanuatu (then known as the New Hebrides). Layard worked enthusiastically with his local assistants to document and understand the customary lives of the people, taking copious notes and making hundreds of photographs. And unlike most of his contemporaries, Layard's images are participatory and experiential, taken during local activities and rituals in which he was involved; as this remarkable record of his work there attests, the lanky, long-nosed "T'soni" (Johnny) is still remembered on Malakula as the first white man who wore the traditional nambas (penis sheath) and participated in kastom dances. The book contains more than 300 of Layard's evocative images, most previously unpublished, along with his field notes and captions.
