Description
For the "Sound of Weimar" project, Franz Liszt expert Martin Haselböck deployed the Vienna Academy Orchestra in the size used for the original performances by the Weimar Hofkapelle, as well as instruments that had either been played in concerts conducted by Liszt himself or that were faithful copies. When the earlier CDs of the series appeared, they were described in such terms as "definitive recording," "exemplary editions," "a resounding success," and "a tonal phenomenon." As Haselböck says, "in contrast to the modern orchestra, the original romantic sound is characterized by deep, velvet warmth of tone and by the possibility of creating subtle gradations in dynamics and articulation." Not only did Vols. 1-4 of the series win the International F. Liszt Record Grand Prix in 2011–12, but radio stations presented them as "CD of the week" on numerous occasions. Included here are Symphonic Poem No. 2 ("Tasso, Lamento e Trionfo") and its "Symphonic Epilogue," Symphonic Poem No. 8 ("Héroïde funèbre"), and Symphonic Poem No. 12 ("The Ideals").
