Description
(2017 Grammy Nominee for Best Historical Album) Ranked high on any list of the greatest pianists of all time, Vladimir Horowitz is heard here in the productive later years of his long, celebrated career, performing at such venues as New York's Avery Fisher Hall, Philadelphia's Academy of Music, and even the White House. This 50-disc boxed set finds the Russian-born American pianist in his element, performing a trove of works by Robert Schumann (Kreisleriana, op. 16; Carnaval, op. 9; and Kinderszenen, op. 15) and Frédéric Chopin (Ballade no. 1, op. 23; Piano Sonata no. 2, op. 35 ["Funeral March"]); and Polonaise in F-sharp Minor, op. 44), as well as Sergei Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto no. 3, Franz Liszt's Mephisto Waltz no. 1, Claude Debussy's "L'isle joyeuse," and Alexander Scriabin's Piano Sonata no. 5, op. 53. Other featured composers include Domenico Scarlatti, Joseph Haydn, and Ludwig van Beethoven, plus Horowitz's take on "God Save the Queen" and "The Star-Spangled Banner."

''It was not only the personality that was extraordinary, but [Horowitz's] pianistic and musical accomplishments, against which piano playing in the future will be measured. His concert performances were extraordinary."—Isaac Stern
