Description
A major literary discovery, this collection presents what a young Anton Chekhov considered his best work, appearing here for the first time as he intended it, and featuring two stories that have not before been translated into English. In 1880, while pursuing his medical studies, Chekhov began writing to support himself and his family. In two years he published more than 60 stories under various pen names, and finally decided to properly establish his literary credentials. He assembled the dozen stories he considered his best work, to be published with illustrations by his brother Nikolay. The Prank, as Chekhov called the book, was ready for the printer when a Tsarist censor suppressed it; as Chekhov wrote to a friend, "My best stories uproot the foundations." Here at last are his satires, send-ups, and tales of student life, artistic ambition, hunting parties, troubled families, love, and betrayal, accompanied by Nikolay's illustrations.
