Description
(Diapason d'Or and Choc du Monde de la Musique Award Winners Included) Not even halfway through his career, Echo Klassik Prize winner Alexandre Tharaud has already earned a reputation as an exceptional interpreter of modernist piano music, and this six-disc anthology makes the case for Tharaud's special gift for performing French music. Two Diapson d'Or and Choc du Monde de la Musique Award–winning discs are devoted to Maurice Ravel—including such works as Gaspard de la Nuit and Le tombeau de Couperin—and two highlight the music of Erik Satie. Tharaud proves himself one of the all-time great interpreters of Satie on such works as Gymnopedie No. 1, Pièces froides, and the Gnossiennes, while the disc of the Frenchman's chamber works is a treasure trove of rarities, including collaborations with violinist Isabelle Faust (Chose vues á droite et á gauche) and the singer Juliette (the ravishing Je Te Veux). Both Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc are represented by their sonatas for cello and piano as well as compositions for clarinet and piano. On the final disc, Tharaud is accompanied by Jean-Guihen Queyras on works for cello and piano by Zoltan Kodaly and Anton Webern, while flutist Philippe Bernold joins the pianist on pieces by Olivier Messiaen, Zoltan Kodaly, Henri Dutilleux, and Pierre Boulez.
