Description
(Grammy Winner Included) One of music's true mavericks, Glenn Gould avoided much of the traditional classical repertoire, applying his singular genius to selections of his own choosing. Surveying the pianist's career-long association with Columbia records, this boxed set features a 416-page hardcover book, three discs of interviews, and 78 remastered discs with original cover artwork and liner notes, among them Gould's revelatory 1955 recording of J.S. Bach's Goldberg Variations and his equally intriguing, Grammy-winning 1981 version of it; Bach is also represented by The Art of the Fugue, the French Suites 14, and the Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard, where he is perfectly complemented by Jaime Laredo. Along with unique accounts of piano sonatas by Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn, here too are composers whose piano works were championed by Gould, including Jean Sibelius, Arnold Schoenberg, Richard Strauss, and Paul Hindemith. Other treasures include Gould's celebrated solo recording of Liszt's adaptation of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5; the album of Renaissance favorites The Consort of Musicke; transcriptions of three Wagner overtures; and Gould's own compositions, the haunting String Quartet, Op. 1, and So You Want to Write a Fugue?
