A spiffy cast enlivens this 1971 western (shot in Spain) about a progression of scams and dirty tricks. A gang of outlaws leaves Texas after a bank job and boards a train for Mexico with the loot. Their leader (Lee Van Cleef) meets and marries a beautiful woman (Gina Lollobrigida), who steals his money and scoots. Once in Mexico, the men take the job of destroying the Mexican army's arsenal for a cool million. After they succeed, they then have to elude both the Mexican army and Billy the Kid in order to collect their payoff.

The cinematography is colorful and the locations in Madrid are scenic (especially the river of the film's title) and suit the film well. Martin even uses some comic moments to lighten up the film."—DVD Drive-In
