Description
In the early decades of the 16th century, Naples began to make a distinct contribution to the Italian musical scene with the genre of "Canzoni Villanesche." Meant for a refined public, these amusing songs poked fun at the literary madrigal and its mystique. However, the arrival of highly accomplished composers such as Adrian Willaert (A quanda, a quand'haveva una vicina) and Orlando di Lasso (e.g., Sto core mio se fosse di diamante and O Lucia miau, miau) brought the genre closer to the refined language of the late 16th-century madrigal. This well-chosen selection of 34 pieces also includes Madonna mia la vostra alma bellezza by Vincenzo Fontana, Baciami, vita mia, baciami anchora by Baldassare Donato, S'io dormo aggio gran male by Meo Fiorentino, and more.

"They're a great deal of fun, with many of the earlier pieces trafficking in delightfully bawdy sexual imagery vastly different from the subtle conceits of the madrigal. Like their Northern counterparts, these villanesche … underwent development as established composers tried out the form…. This is high-spirited, simple, direct music, given a small but important dose of period percussion by Festa."—All Music Guide
