Description
American baritone Barry McDaniel was one of the outstanding singers of the postwar era. Characterized by feeling, craftsmanship, and impeccable singing, this wide-ranging program of songs captures both his artistry and his credo: "Whatever I sing, I have to believe in it." Selections include Robert Schumann's Six Poems and Requiem, Op. 90; Claude Debussy's three Le Promenoir des Deux Amants; Henri Duparc's "Chanson triste," "Lamento," "Le Manoir de Rosamonde," "Extase," Soupir," and "Phidylé"; Maurice Ravel's Chansons Madécasses; and more. BBC Music magazine called this release a "repertoire essential: McDaniel inevitably sang in the shadow of [Dietrich] Fischer-Dieskau; but this double CD reveals his deeply thoughtful baritone, in superbly accompanied Lieder and mélodie."

"This is revelatory singing. Barry McDaniel was healed by music, and was able to bring the healing power of music to others with his gentle, lyric voice."—American Record Guide

"[McDaniel's] warm-textured singing and persuasive interpretative manner of various art songs are tellingly illustrated in a programme of works by Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Duparc, Ravel and Debussy. Perspective purchasers need only sample the opening track, Schubert's sizeable Lied 'Der Winterabend', to have their most optimistic suspicions confirmed."—Gramophone
