Description
Excluded from the 1889 World's Fair art exhibition in Paris, Paul Gauguin and his friends displayed their art at a café instead; the Volpini Suite—Gauguin's 11 lithographs of rural and uncivilized life—would mark a fateful turning point in his artistic development. These works are featured among the 110 color and black and white illustrations in this book, along with related paintings by Gauguin and such peers as Émile Bernard, Charles Laval, and Louis Anquetin. The book also discusses Gauguin's emergence as a major artist and his dealings with patron Theo van Gogh, and includes selections from his correspondence.
