Description
Isabella d'Este, marchioness of Mantua, was a collector of antiquities, a patron of art, and one of the most vivid personalities of the Italian Renaissance. Her artistic relationship with Leonardo da Vinci began in 1499 when the artist spent several months in Mantua, where he met Isabella and produced a finished drawing of her. Over six years, Isabella asked him to undertake other paintings and projects, and though little came of these requests, Leonardo did produce for her some drawings of antiquities and started work on a painting of Christ as a 12-year-old boy. Illustrated with 120 color and black and white photos and reproductions of art, this book explores the ties between artists and patrons in 15th-century Italy.
