In addition to the Nunca Fue Pena Mayor mass by prominent Spanish Renaissance composer Francisco de Peñalosa (c. 1470–1528), this disc of sacred music offers a selection of his motets and hymns that includes Sacris solemniis and Memorare Piissima. De Peñalosa composed for the royal chapel in the court at Aragon, for Seville Cathedral, and for the papal chapel of Leo X. Dominique Vellard and his vocal ensemble are joined in these performances—made in Maguelone Cathedral—by the rich instrumental brass talents of the Toulouse-based Les Sacqueboutiers. Named after the sackbut (an early form of trombone), this quartet also features a cornett, dulcian (early bassoon), and shawm (forerunner of the oboe).
"Enthralling and highly enjoyable…. It's necessary to listen carefully in order to appreciate the subtleties of Peñalosa's melodic variety and richness. Vellard and his performers specifically sponsor such attention."—Classical Net
