Description
Set to a poem by William Collins and first performed in 1750, William Hayes's The Passions—An Ode for Music honors the "power of music"—here embodied by sopranos Ulrike Hofbauer (Cheerfulness, Hope, Reason) and Evelyn Tubb (Cheerfulness, Melancholy, Narrator); alto Sumihito Uesugi (Jealousy, Joy); tenor David Munderloh (Despair, Fear); and bass Lisandro Abadie (Anger, Revenge).

"Hayes, a professor of music at Oxford, was one of Handel's most fervent advocates in the mid-18th century, and no mean composer himself…. The score … is inventive, expressive, vividly orchestrated, and here sung and played with the right mix of discipline and spontaneity."—Sunday Times, UK

"All soloists have very fine voices, and are totally at home in the baroque idiom…. If I have to mention one highlight it is probably the aria 'When Cheerfulness, a nymph of healthiest hue,' … a duet—sung by Evelyn Tubb and Ulrike Hofbauer—which merges into a chorus. The choir of the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and La Cetra Barockorchester Basel are also top-notch."—Musica Dei Donum
