Description
Johann Sebastian Bach's late-career masterpiece The Art of the Fugue, BWV 1080, is performed by Fabio Bonizzoni, with assistance on second harpsichord for four of the contrapuncti by Mariko Uchimura. In this recording, he opted for the structure of Bach's first autograph version, the so-called P200 manuscript. Bonizzoni, whose artistry was heard in a memorable series of recordings of Handel's Italian cantatas, considers this album one of his own most personal projects.

"As one would expect from a Koopman pupil there are quite a lot of ornaments, especially trills…. [Bonizzoni's] playing is technically brilliant and his interpretation musically compelling."—Music Dei Donum

"Bonizzoni's instrument is a modern one built by Willem Kroesbergen, not one of those ultra-weak, tinny models from the 1750s…. The rich, full bass range of his instrument provides an excellent grounding for the sparkling fugues created above it, and in the duo-keyboard pieces it's nice to hear two artists working in such close collaboration stylistically that you can scarcely tell who is who. Bonizzoni's Italian heritage … helps him keep the music light and crisp. In the 'Canon in Hypodiapason,' the music fairly dances like a tarantella…. A superb performance…. I recommend it wholeheartedly."—Fanfare
