Description
Although much of his fame rests upon his sophisticated orchestral compositions and his highly appealing solo piano works, Béla Bartók also wrote six condensed and rigorous string quartets, a modern equivalent of Beethoven's masterpieces in the genre. A piece with shifting moods, the 1928 String Quartet no. 4 features an all-pizzicato fourth movement and a strident finale. The elegiac String Quartet no. 6 was Bartók's last great work before he fled his native Hungary in 1940 for the U.S. The Diapason d'Or–winning Quatuor Athenaeum-Enesco has an affinity for Eastern European classical music, and has previously recorded works by Leos Janácek, Antonín Dvorák, and their namesake, Georges Enesco.

"Bartók's quartets have been the most popular set written in the 20th century, rivaled only by Shostakovich's. Beginning with 1, with its obvious blend of late Beethoven, French Impressionism, and Southeast European folk music … Bartók developed an instantly recognizable, highly personal style in this idiom, moving through the arch form of 4 and 5, and ending with the unprecedented form of Quartet 6."—Alexander J. Morin, Classical Music, The Listener's Companion
