Description
The beautiful 1852 melody Mon pauvre cœur by Edmond Dédé (1827–1901) is the oldest surviving piece of sheet music by a New Orleans Creole of color. By 1857, Dédé had saved enough money to emigrate to France, and in 1860 he went to Bordeaux, where he conducted the orchestra at the prestigious Grand Theatre, and composed the delightful dances, songs, and other works sampled on this disc, which include the carefree choral piece Tond les chiens, coup' les chats, the wistful Rêverie champêtre, the French royalist cantata Battex aux Champs, and the cheerful Françoise et Tortillard, while Chicago and Méphisto masqué appear in both solo piano and orchestral transcriptions.

"This music was virtually unknown in America until it was revived by Richard Rosenberg and his Hot Springs Festival performers in the 1990s. Rosenberg reconstructed instrumental parts for the orchestra pieces and conducts these vigorously…. The best selections on the CD are those for solo piano, especially a waltz called 'Chicago', and the 'Méphisto masqué'. The old-fashioned, almost corny lilt of these works is well captured by pianists Gary Hammond and Mary Scott Spry."—Classics Today
