Description
In the Piano Quintet in A Minor of American composer Arthur Foote (1853–1937), the legacy of Dvorák and Brahms is absorbed into Foote's wealth of melodic invention and his textured keyboard writing. This release marked the first time his vivacious String Quartet, op. 32, was recorded in its entirety. Retaining the soaring melodies of his previous works, the op. 70 string quartet of 1911 delved into more expressive and urgent domains reminiscent of Janácek and Schoenberg. The Da Vinci Quartet was prizewinner and finalist, respectively, in the Dmitri Shostakovich International String Quartet Competition and the Naumberg Award for Chamber Music. Winner of the bronze medal at the Seventh International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, James Barbagallo died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1996 at the age of 43; this performance of Foote's piano quintet was one his last recordings.
