Description
The lyrical and refined style of New England school composer Arthur Foote (1853–1937) is given a splendid showcase in this 1998 recording. Reflecting Foote's lifelong adoration of Brahms and Wagner, the works lean toward late-Romantic, rhapsodic moods, while maintaining their individuality. "The piece makes a statement that is benevolent and compassionate rather than passionate," wrote Foote's biographer Nicholas Tawa of the Piano Quartet in C Major, op. 23, of 1890. After its premiere, San Francisco Examiner critic Ray Brown called the The Nocturne and Scherzo for flute and strings "fresh and spontaneous, plentiful in melody and colored with beauty. The Nocturne … is filled with the quickening impulses of spring, and the Scherzo has a nimble and joyous wit." John Burke, program annotator for the Boston Symphony, dubbed it "a distillation of sheer sensuous delight."
