Description
British composer John Tavener's piano works mark his stylistic and spiritual journey on a personal level. The loss of his cats inspired him to write the bell-like In Memory of Two Cats and Mandoodles, which contains a sly quote from Chopin. Ypakoë, with passages in a Middle Eastern style, is a contemplative meditation on the passion and resurrection of Christ that also evokes Bach's counterpoint. Tavener describes Pratirüpa (Sanskrit for "reflection") as "a series of self-reflecting harmonies, melodies and rhythms attempting to reflect the most beautiful, the Divine Presence which resides in every human being." A former student Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat specializes in modern and contemporary classical music, and this 2008 disc complements his past recordings of such composers as John Adams and Arvo Pärt.

"[Ralph] Van Raat … impart[s] a new lease of life with each sectional repetition, keeping the performance focused and alert. Interestingly enough, the earliest work on this CD, Palin, composed in 1977, does much the same thing in contrasting dense and chromatically saturated textures with more typically reflective and meditative moments."—Gramophone

"Pratirupa (2003) … is one of the more remarkable works for the instrument written in the last few years…. Van Raat is beautifully recorded, and the production may be considered authoritative."—American Record Guide
