Description
During the early phase of its career, the Kenton Orchestra's repertoire was geared to the tastes of its dancing audiences, with emphasis given to big band and Latin-American instrumentals, along with vocal ballads. These enthusiastically received, one-chorus takes prefigure Stan Kenton's eventual evolution from dance floor to concert hall. The 25 tracks include "No Tears," "Hold Back the Dawn," "Half a Heart," "Stop Your Teasing," "Let Her Go," "Congo Clambake," "Trumpet Symphonette," "Love Turns Winter to Spring," and more.

"One of the greatest combinations of rhythm, harmony and melody that's ever been assembled by one leader."—George T. Simon, author of The Big Bands, on the Kenton band in 1941

"Jack Ordean was an astringent altoist whose solo on 'Prelude to Nothing' sidesteps the Carter–Hodges influences to rampant effect. I assume the trumpeter on the same tune is Chico Alvarez and his playing here is fiery and impressive…. Listen to the three drums pyrotechnics of 'Memphis Lament' or the sectional saxophone work on 'Arkansas Traveler' or those leading voicings on 'Etude for Saxophones' to appreciate what Kenton was trying to achieve in terms of instrumental colour and rhythmic zest."—Muscweb International
