Description
(Grammy Winner Included) "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's … Supercomposer!" A homage to Superman comics, the Metropolis Symphony (1993) was Michael Daugherty's breakthrough work, and the 2011 recording included here won three Grammys. His three-movement Philadelphia Stories evokes the inner city (Sundown on South Street), Edgar Allan Poe (The Tell-Tale Harp), and the larger-than-life conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra (Bells for Stokowski). Other pieces include Route 66, Time Machine, Ghost Ranch, UFO for solo percussion and orchestra, and Deus Ex Machina for piano and orchestra.

"Deus ex Machina is a brilliant piano concerto … in which each movement uses imagery of trains…. Marin Alsop leads the Colorado Symphony in a stirring and committed performance [of Philadelphia Stories]."—Audiophile Audition

"'Lex' is a spectacular scherzo gigue for violin and orchestra depicting the diabolical villain Lex Luthor. Violinist Mary Kathryn van Ogdale is dizzying, as are her fine Nashville colleagues. 'Krypton' is smeary and dramatic. 'MXYZPTLK', the "mischievous imp," is another concertante scherzo, this one for two flutes. 'Oh, Lois' is a "faster than a speeding bullet" scherzo. Finally, 'Red Cape Tango' is a standing ovation–inspiring 'Dies Irae' fantasy commemorating Superman's culminating battle with Doomsday, filled with humor and spectacular orchestration. The whole work is entertaining and impressive, extremely well played here by this excellent orchestra."—American Record Guide

"He creates elaborate tone poems that are also time capsules that preserve the stories and myths of American popular culture, and he uses the orchestra to paint vivid pictures of his quirky subjects with eclectic and sometimes kitschy musical references. The imagery of Daugherty's music is so well-known that many of his pieces need little explanation: Metropolis Symphony, Route 66, UFO, Ghost Ranch, and Sunset Strip evoke their subjects so immediately and brilliantly, the listener always has an idea of the narratives, whether they are of real or imaginary scenes."—All Music Guide
