This 2003 production of The Marriage of Figaro was mounted in Florence by distinguished English director Sir Jonathan Miller. Soprano Eteri Gvazava is wonderful to listen to and look at as the traduced but resourceful Countess Almaviva. The title role is sung by Italian bass-baritone Giorgio Surian, while bel canto star Patrizia Ciofi sings the part of his fiancee Susanna and Italian baritone Lucio Gallo portrays the manipulative Count. Conductor Zubin Mehta brings out not only the tension and drive of the music but also its harmonic richness.
"Giovanna Donadini is a good Marcellina, as is Eduardo Chama as Bartolo, and Sergio Bertocchi as Basilio…. Eteri Gvazava is a vocally fine Countess, and the star of the production is Marina Comparato, who is a delightful Cherubino…. The picture quality is good and the sound is first-rate."—Fanfare
